DUST Economics Observatory
Real-time generation, consumption, and sustainability metrics for the Midnight Network's DUST token economy.
Understanding DUST Economics
Generation: DUST is produced passively by staking NIGHT tokens on Cardano. The generation rate depends on total staked NIGHT and the protocol's specks-per-star-per-second parameter. Each address has a capacity cap (5x their NIGHT balance in DUST), after which generation halts until DUST is spent or transferred.
Consumption: Every transaction on the Midnight Network requires a DUST fee, which is permanently burned. The burn rate depends on network activity and average fee size (measured in specks, the smallest DUST unit: 1 DUST = 10^15 specks).
Sustainability: The sustainability score measures the balance between generation and consumption. A score of 100 means generation far exceeds burn (surplus), while a low score signals that network usage may outpace supply. A healthy economy maintains a score above 80.
DUST Sponsorship
One wallet can pay the DUST fee for another wallet's transaction. The sponsor signs and contributes the fee input, while the recipient's transaction proceeds normally. This is essential when a wallet has freshly received NIGHT but its DUST is still "warming up" — DUST generation ramps over the grace period after a NIGHT UTXO arrives, so a brand-new holder may have zero spendable DUST despite owning NIGHT.
Implementation: Midnight's WalletFacade supports sponsorship natively, letting one sub-wallet underwrite another's fees. Source: dev.to/wilsonhoe.
